We recently removed our 75-year-old oak tree, which was 12 feet around and 85 feet tall. It had survived lightning strikes, poor pruning, and insect infestations over the years. That's why we chose Arbor Grove Tree Care, a Certified Arborist and Tree Risk Assessment Qualified company, to handle the job safely. Watching their team work together was impressive. They made a difficult job look easy. The brave hero in the tree, the crane operator, and the ground crew communicated smoothly and worked in sync. They chipped or hauled away everything. The cleanup was so thorough you couldn't tell they'd been there. The cost was reasonable for the six hours it took to complete. The team was professional, experienced, orderly, and efficient. I would definitely use Arbor Grove Tree Care again and highly recommend their services.

Arbor Grove has been my 'go to' tree service for a couple of years. They have removed trees, trimmed trees and shaped up the apple trees in my orchard. They show up when they say they will, do a great job, and clean up after. I cannot say enough good things about Arbor Grove Tree Care.

Tree Removal Across West Michigan — Lakeshore to Inland, Credentialed Crews

Arbor Grove Tree Care covers the lakeshore-to-inland West Michigan corridor from a Muskegon home base. Our core service area is Muskegon and Ottawa Counties, with broader regional coverage available when the work calls for it. Three publicly verifiable credentials on every removal, transparent published pricing, and 24/7 emergency response across a service area that runs from Holton in the north down to Holland in the south.

Owner Zachary Froster grew up in Muskegon County tree work (his father has owned Tom's Tree Service since 1981) and built Arbor Grove around three credentials uncommon in this market: ISA Certified Arborist (MI-4771A), Tree Risk Assessment Qualified (TRAQ), and Michigan Oak Wilt Qualified (MI-151). Every West Michigan removal has an ISA Certified Arborist on site.

Why Trees Come Out Across West Michigan

We don't recommend removal lightly. Most West Michigan removals happen for one of these reasons:

  • Storm damage with structural failure. The June–October storm season splits crowns and pulls root plates across the lakeshore. Once major bark is stripped or the root plate has lifted, recovery isn't realistic.
  • Dead or hollow-trunked trees. Internal decay visible through bark cracks, fungal conks on the trunk, advanced cavity formation — removal candidates, not pruning candidates.
  • Oak wilt confirmed. Oak wilt is now confirmed in both Muskegon and Ottawa Counties. Red oaks infected with oak wilt cannot be saved. Removal under Michigan Oak Wilt Coalition protocols protects neighboring oaks.
  • Emerald Ash Borer–killed white ash. Most untreated ash across West Michigan is dead or has decay columns producing unpredictable limb drop.
  • Construction, addition, or pool installation. We coordinate with builders and survey before equipment goes in.
  • Real estate transactions. Sellers and buyers call for TRAQ Level 2 or Level 3 written risk assessments.
  • Beech leaf disease. Affecting beech populations in Ottawa County — affected trees decline over 5–10 years and need proactive removal.

Soil and Conditions Across the Region

The conditions shift dramatically across our service area, and they shape how we approach each removal:

  • Lakeshore zones (Norton Shores, Grand Haven, Spring Lake, Ferrysburg, Whitehall, Montague, Holland) — sandy, well-drained soil that gives less anchorage to mature trees; sustained west winds off Lake Michigan; lake-effect ice and snow.
  • Mid-distance zones (Muskegon, Muskegon Heights, Roosevelt Park, North Muskegon) — glacial lake plain soil, mature established canopy, exposure to lake-effect weather without the immediate lakeshore wind.
  • Inland and rural zones (Ravenna, Holton, Coopersville) — clay-heavy soils with better anchorage, larger lots and farm acreage, dense oak corridors that put oak wilt management front and center.

Species across the region include silver maple, red maple, sugar maple; pin oak, red oak, white oak, bur oak; American beech; eastern white pine and red pine; black locust and honey locust; and what's left of the white ash after Emerald Ash Borer.

The West Michigan Removal Process

1. Site assessment by an ISA Certified Arborist

We walk the site. Species, diameter, lean direction, decay indicators, soil bearing capacity, drop zone targets, overhead utilities, neighbor property considerations, equipment access. You get a written estimate with line items before any work begins.

2. Sectional takedown with rigging

Climbers ascend, set a rigging point high in the canopy, and lower each section through the drop zone on a rope. Doubled rope rigging for heavy wood, separate tag line on every piece. Houses, fences, gardens, and rooflines stay intact.

3. Crane-assisted removal

For large trees, heavy tops, or removals where rigging can't safely reach the drop zone, we bring in a crane. The crane lifts whole sections clear of the roofline and sets them down for processing. Faster, safer over structures, and frequently cheaper than pure rigging on a big tree. Tree Removal details.

4. Stump grinding or full removal

Standard removals include stump grinding to 6–8 inches below grade. Full stump extraction is available where immediate replanting or hardscape is planned. Stump removal options.

5. Cleanup

Every removal includes full debris cleanup — chipped, hauled, or stacked. Lawn raked, walks blown, site left so clean you can barely tell the tree was there. Wood can be left cut to fireplace length on request.

Three Hazards Active Across West Michigan

1. Oak wilt is confirmed in both counties.

Fatal to red oak species, spreading through root grafts and sap-feeding beetles. The April 15–July 15 no-pruning rule applies to every oak in our service area. Our owner is Michigan Oak Wilt Qualified (MI-151), one of a small number of qualified specialists across all of Michigan.

2. Sandy lakeshore anchorage.

Mature trees on lakeshore lots can uproot whole during major storms rather than break. TRAQ-qualified risk assessment is essential before storm season for any high-value lakeshore property.

3. Emerald Ash Borer aftermath.

Most untreated white ash across West Michigan is dead or structurally compromised. Standing dead ash drops limbs and entire trunks without warning — they're high-priority removals, not "next year" jobs.

Permits and Local Regulations

Cities and townships across West Michigan have varying tree ordinances covering removal of significant trees on private property. Lakeshore addresses may require Critical Dune Area permits through EGLE before any work begins. We handle permit coordination in-house across the entire service area. Right-of-way trees are removed by the municipality — we'll tell you when that's the case.

For real estate transactions, a TRAQ-qualified written report satisfies buyer, lender, and insurer requirements. Tree Risk Assessments.

West Michigan Tree Removal — Frequently Asked Questions

How much does tree removal cost across West Michigan?

It depends on size, access, and what's underneath the canopy. A small ornamental in an open yard might be $400–$700. A 24-inch maple in a tight lot with rigging can run $1,500–$2,500. Crane-assisted removals over structures typically start around $2,500 and scale with complexity. Estimates are free, written, and itemized.

Do you handle permits across multiple West Michigan cities?

Yes. Each city and township in our service area has its own tree ordinance, and lakeshore addresses may need Critical Dune Area permits through EGLE. We handle permit coordination in-house across the entire service area so you don't navigate multiple municipal forms yourself.

How quickly can you respond to an emergency anywhere in West Michigan?

Phone monitored around the clock. Sub-75-minute typical response inside core service-area cities during a storm event. We handle tarping, hazard removal, structural protection, and clearing access for restoration crews.

Do you remove trees with oak wilt across West Michigan?

Yes. Owner Zachary Froster is Michigan Oak Wilt Qualified (MI-151), one of a small number of qualified specialists across all of Michigan. Oak wilt is confirmed in both Muskegon and Ottawa Counties. We follow MDARD and Michigan Oak Wilt Coalition protocols to limit spread to neighboring oaks through shared root grafts.

Can you handle large or complex removals across the region?

Yes. We bring in a crane for large trees, heavy tops, or removals where rigging can't safely reach the drop zone. We bid work other companies decline — over structures, in tight access, with heavy tops. Crane capability is part of every removal toolkit.

What happens to the stump after the tree comes down?

Standard removals include stump grinding to 6–8 inches below grade. Full stump extraction is available where immediate replanting or hardscape is planned. Wood can be left cut to fireplace length on request.

Are you insured for residential and commercial removals across West Michigan?

Yes. Arbor Grove carries general liability and workers' compensation insurance. Certificates are provided on request before any work begins. Your homeowners insurer, mortgage company, HOA, or commercial property manager can verify coverage directly.

Do you coordinate with insurance adjusters after storm damage?

Yes. We document storm damage removals with photos, written scope, and invoices formatted for insurance claims. We work directly with adjusters when needed to clarify scope and pricing. Most storm removals in West Michigan are covered under standard homeowner policies.
