We recently removed our 75-year-old oak tree, which was 12 feet around and 85 feet tall. It had survived lightning strikes, poor pruning, and insect infestations over the years. That's why we chose Arbor Grove Tree Care, a Certified Arborist and Tree Risk Assessment Qualified company, to handle the job safely. Watching their team work together was impressive. They made a difficult job look easy. The brave hero in the tree, the crane operator, and the ground crew communicated smoothly and worked in sync. They chipped or hauled away everything. The cleanup was so thorough you couldn't tell they'd been there. The cost was reasonable for the six hours it took to complete. The team was professional, experienced, orderly, and efficient. I would definitely use Arbor Grove Tree Care again and highly recommend their services.

Arbor Grove has been my 'go to' tree service for a couple of years. They have removed trees, trimmed trees and shaped up the apple trees in my orchard. They show up when they say they will, do a great job, and clean up after. I cannot say enough good things about Arbor Grove Tree Care.

Spring Lake, Michigan

Tree Removal in Spring Lake, MI — Lakeshore Wind, Tight Lots, Mature Trees

Spring Lake — both the village and the township — sits on the east side of Spring Lake, with the channel opening west to Lake Michigan. That geography shapes every removal we do here. Sandy soil with shallow root plates, sustained west wind exposure, mature canopies planted before the lots were small. We plan removals around these conditions from the first site walk.

Owner Zachary Froster grew up in tree work in Muskegon County (his father has owned Tom's Tree Service since 1981) and built Arbor Grove around three publicly verifiable credentials uncommon in this market: ISA Certified Arborist (MI-4771A), Tree Risk Assessment Qualified (TRAQ), and Michigan Oak Wilt Qualified (MI-151). Every Spring Lake removal has an ISA Certified Arborist on site.

Why Trees Come Out in Spring Lake

We don't recommend removal lightly. Most Spring Lake removals happen for one of these reasons:

  • Storm damage with structural failure. Mature maples, oaks, and poplars split by wind, lifted root plates from saturated soil, large limbs torn out over driveways and rooflines.
  • Dead or hollow-trunked trees. Internal decay visible through bark cracks, fungal conks on the trunk, advanced cavity formation — these are removal candidates, not pruning candidates.
  • Oak wilt confirmed in red oak. Red oaks cannot be saved once infected. Removal under Michigan Oak Wilt Coalition protocols protects surrounding oaks.
  • Emerald Ash Borer–killed white ash. Most untreated ash across Ottawa County is dead or has decay columns producing unpredictable limb drop.
  • Construction and additions. We coordinate with builders, fence the work zone, and protect surrounding landscape.
  • Real estate transactions. Sellers and buyers call for TRAQ Level 2 or Level 3 written risk assessments when the tree conversation becomes a deal contingency.
  • Hazard mitigation for an imminent threat. A large limb over a kid's play area, a cracked trunk above a driveway, a leaning tree after a storm — these are the same-day calls.

The Spring Lake Removal Process

1. Site assessment by an ISA Certified Arborist

We walk the site. Species, diameter at breast height, lean direction, decay indicators, soil bearing capacity, drop zone targets, overhead utilities, neighbor property considerations, equipment access. You get a written estimate with line items before we touch a saw.

2. Sectional takedown with rigging

Spring Lake's lots almost never allow a one-piece felling. Climbers ascend, set a rigging point high in the canopy, and lower each section through the drop zone on a rope. Doubled rope rigging for heavy wood, separate tag line on every piece. Houses, fences, and gardens stay intact.

3. Crane-assisted removal for large trees

For large trees with heavy tops or where the rigging path won't reach, we bring in a crane. The crane lifts whole sections clear of the roofline and sets them down for processing. Crane work is faster, safer over structures, and frequently cheaper than pure rigging on a big tree. Tree Removal details.

4. Stump grinding or full removal

Standard removals include stump grinding to 6–8 inches below grade. Full stump extraction (pulling the root ball) is available where immediate replanting or hardscape is planned. Stump removal options.

5. Cleanup

Every removal includes full debris cleanup. Limbs chipped, logs hauled or stacked, stump grindings removed or backfilled, lawn raked, walks blown, site left clean. Wood can be left cut to fireplace length on request.

Common Spring Lake Removals

  • Silver and red maples. Fast-growing, weak-wooded, brittle — the most common removal across Spring Lake.
  • Bur oak, white oak, red oak. Heavy wood, slow to fail, catastrophic when they do. Oak wilt screening before any oak work.
  • Cottonwood and silver poplar. Short-lived, brittle, common on lake-exposed lots.
  • Norway spruce, blue spruce, eastern white pine. Large evergreens that fail whole in root plate heaves.
  • White ash. Emerald Ash Borer aftermath — priority removals.
  • Ornamental pears, crabapples, and declining ornamentals. Common in newer subdivisions and lakefront redevelopments.

Spring Lake-Specific Hazards

  • Sandy lakeshore anchorage. Mature trees within a few blocks of the channel can uproot whole rather than break.
  • Sustained west wind loading. Trees that look fine in a calm week can fail under sustained westerlies during a fall storm front.
  • Mature canopy on small lots. Trees planted 60–80 years ago when lots were larger now overhang neighbors, garages, and rooflines.
  • Beech leaf disease. Now confirmed in Ottawa County beech populations — affected trees decline over 5–10 years and need proactive removal before they fail.

Permits and Local Regulations

The Village of Spring Lake and Spring Lake Township both have tree ordinances covering significant tree removal on private property. Lakeshore addresses may require Critical Dune Area permits through EGLE before any work begins. We handle permit coordination in-house. Right-of-way trees are removed by the municipality — we'll tell you when that's the case.

For real estate transactions, a TRAQ-qualified written report satisfies buyer, lender, and insurer requirements. Tree Risk Assessments.

Spring Lake Tree Removal — Frequently Asked Questions

How much does tree removal cost in Spring Lake?

It depends on size, access, and what's underneath the canopy. A small ornamental in an open yard might be $400–$700. A 24-inch maple in a tight Spring Lake lot with rigging can run $1,500–$2,500. Crane-assisted removals over structures typically start around $2,500 and scale with complexity. Estimates are free, written, and itemized.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Spring Lake?

It depends on the tree and the location. The Village of Spring Lake and Spring Lake Township both have tree ordinances for significant trees on private property, and some lakeshore addresses require a Critical Dune Area permit through EGLE. We handle permit coordination in-house so you don't navigate state forms yourself.

How quickly can you respond to an emergency in Spring Lake?

Phone monitored around the clock. Typical response time inside the Spring Lake village limits is under 75 minutes during a storm event. We handle tarping, hazard removal, structural protection, and clearing access for restoration crews.

Can you remove a tree close to my house or my neighbor's property?

Yes — that's most of what we do. Sectional takedown with rigging lets us lower pieces through tight drop zones. For larger trees over structures, we bring in a crane to lift sections clear of the roofline. Property condition is documented before and after for your records.

What happens to the stump after the tree comes down?

Standard removals include stump grinding to 6–8 inches below grade, enough for sod or replanting. Full stump extraction is available where immediate replanting or hardscape is planned. Wood can be left cut to fireplace length on request.

Are you insured for residential removals in Spring Lake?

Yes. Arbor Grove carries general liability and workers' compensation insurance. Certificates are provided on request before any work begins — your homeowners insurer, mortgage company, or HOA can verify coverage directly.

Do you remove trees with oak wilt in Spring Lake?

Yes. Owner Zachary Froster is Michigan Oak Wilt Qualified (MI-151), one of a small number of qualified specialists across Michigan. We follow MDARD and Michigan Oak Wilt Coalition protocols for infected tree removals to limit spread to neighboring oaks through shared root grafts.

Will my homeowner's insurance cover storm damage tree removal?

Most Michigan homeowner policies cover storm damage tree removal when the tree falls on a covered structure. We document storm removals with photos and written scope formatted for insurance claims, and work directly with adjusters when needed to clarify scope and pricing.
