Pruning That Extends the Life of Your Trees
Pruning is the most common tree care practice across West Michigan, and the easiest one to get wrong. Over-pruning, topping, and lion's-tailing are still common in this market, and each one shortens the life of the tree. At Arbor Grove Tree Care, every cut follows ANSI A300 pruning standards and is performed by an ISA Certified Arborist.
Owner Zachary Froster has been pruning trees in West Michigan since childhood, working alongside his father at Tom's Tree Service in Muskegon. He founded Arbor Grove on a single principle: prune only what the tree needs, in the right place, at the right time. That philosophy shows up in every job we take.
Pruning done right is invisible. Pruning done wrong takes years off a tree's life.

Pruning Questions
When is the best time to prune trees in West Michigan?
Late winter through early spring (before bud break) is ideal for most species. Summer pruning is appropriate for deadwood removal and minor corrective cuts, while fall pruning is generally avoided because it can stimulate late growth vulnerable to winter damage.
How often should my trees be pruned?
Most mature trees benefit from pruning every 3-5 years. Young trees should be pruned every 1-2 years during their establishment phase to develop good structure. We can build a year-round maintenance plan tailored to your canopy.
Will pruning hurt my tree?
Done correctly, pruning improves tree health and safety. Done incorrectly (topping, over-lifting, lion's-tailing), it can cause long-term decline. Every cut we make follows ANSI A300 standards and is led by an ISA Certified Arborist.
Do I need a permit to prune trees in West Michigan?
In most municipalities, no permit is needed for routine pruning. Protected species, right-of-way trees, and shoreline properties may have local rules. We'll advise during your on-site assessment.
